BackgroundBerliner Festspiele is one of the largest cultural institutions in
Berlin. All year round, they host a multitude of festivals, exhibitions and individual events in two houses – the Haus der Berliner Festspiele and the Gropius Bau.
Our main focus when developing and refining their identity was to give individual freedom to each single festival / event while still maintaining the umbrella brand’s overall visual language.
Differentiation through typography, unification through grid
Within the Berliner Festspiele universe, each festival’s unique character is expressed through its own typeface, highlighting the distinct identity of each festival.
Over the course of five years, we’ve developed countless visual worlds – made up of analogue experiments, multifaceted digitally created designs as well as collaborations with artists from all around the world.

Background
As one of Germany’s leading ballet companies, Staatsballett Berlin plays an essential role in the development and preservation of the art of ballet both locally and internationally. This project allowed us to immerse ourselves in the world of dance, capturing its grace, energy and emotion and translating it into a visual narrative. Working closely with the amazing team at Staatsballett Berlin, we have created a design that we believe reflects both the art of ballet and contemporary design.

Every year, the TheaterTreffen festival brings remarkable productions from Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as works by emerging artists from across the world to Berlin. Having a long history and tradition, the TheaterTreffen constantly brings socially relevant topics into focus with its several artistic and discursive formats. For the key visual of TT21 we collaborated with Rachel Maclean taking her animated eye as basis for several short trailers and animations for digital displays in public space.

In collaboration with theaternetzwerk.digital we also created a digital digital stage on which the festival was streamed live and viewers could attend after parties in the virtual garden.

The Corona pandemic made life for the Jazzfest team more than hard – it was impossible to plan an international festival with lockdowns, new policies, and regulations changing every minute all around the world. Our visual concept for Jazzfest Berlin 2020 reflects the team’s process one-to-one. Crossing out, overpainting, highlighting, rearranging.

Background
Displacement has become a pivotal experience of our contemporary world and one of the most significant consequences of neo-liberal society and its inequalities. Tanznacht Berlin 2020: VERTIGO refers to the difficulty in finding orientation, to a state of constant dizziness, where crises are followed by crises, and society seems constantly on the verge of collapse while more and more technological innovations are pushed on the market. The five-day programme of dance performances and a choreographic group exhibition was framed by a symposium, a documentary film programme, performative tours, musical performances, discussions and community events.

Displacement and reorientation:
Visions of humanity in space
Visually translating the subjects of displacement and re-orientation we used Don Davis’s space art portrayals from the 1970’s as key visuals – artistic visions of future space colonies and humanity in space. The artworks reflect the main thematic focal points: finding orientation in a state of displacement and the critically transgressive power of imaginative travel. They propose strange and unexpected visions of possible futures, powerful scenarios that can be disturbing or amusing, comfortable or aggressive. They reimagine behaviours, relationships, orders (and disorders) within our current society and consider how some divergent impulses collide or evaporate.
The festival publication is the key media.

Background
The Quillos do not shy away from commuting on the north-south axis Uckermark-Eberswalde-Berlin. Everyone would like to travel even more by train, but in rural areas it is really difficult without a car. The generation change has begun, music is played on iPads and some Quillos are even digital natives.
The spirit: music in the making, always fresh, sometimes unexpected, often surprising. Driven by what connects. With people and for people, and a penchant for challenges. A family atmosphere, established structures, new friends and old acquaintances. Anyone who works closely with the Quillos says you and sits at the table. A bit of friendly chaos – but only where it belongs, please.
Large, bold typography, placed within a clear rythmic grid is intertwined with rough, sometimes abstract illustrations that create event-specific visuals!

Presenting both style-defining icons of jazz and young positions from a wide variety of styles, Jazzfest Berlin presents a festival programme full of creative border-crossings and collective visions. Jazzfest Berlin has become a thriving melting pot for musicians and artists of all nations, interests and genders. The Covid-pandemic forced the Jazzfest team to setup a hybrid concept enabling live-streams on arte.tv. The 2021 edition was the first one to partly open its doors to the public again. Live music was finally back.
Sound on!

Background
As a production and performance venue and school for contemporary dance techniques, Tanzfabrik Berlin has enjoyed national and international recognition in the dance and performance scene and beyond for more than 40 years. Starting with several workshops we helped the Tanzfabrik team to unterstand, structure and sharpen their cosmos around the art of dance, performances and education. The jointly developed identity compass served as basis for the visual concept we developed for Tanzfabrik’s two branches – SCHOOL and STAGE – visually connecting them as family while still leaving enough freedom for each of them to individually react to their own needs.

Background
Musikfest Berlin 2019 marked the launch of the concert season in Berlin. Over 21 days, 26 events at the Philharmonie, its Chamber Music Hall and at Konzerthaus Berlin presented 65 works by around 25 composers, featuring 22 instrumental and vocal ensembles and more than 50 soloists from the international music scene. For the key visual of Musikfest Berlin 2019 we worked with purely analogue, haptic overlays experimenting with coatings of colour and fluid material.
Different techniques result in various diversified materialistic textures representing the different phases of music. All motifs work with layerings, depth, materiality, and structures wihtout the use of colour ion order to emphasise the haptic results.
Chaos and harmony are only a matter of magnification.
